This month we delve into Henry Lawson’s classic Australian short story, The Drover’s wife, as well as Leah Purcell’s bold reimagining of Lawson’s story, The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson. Purcell reworks the story from an Indigenous Feminist perspective, depicting the struggles of a wife battling the harsh frontier of the Australian bushland. It is a compelling thriller that confronts issues of race, gender, violence and inheritance.

We will read and discuss Lawson’s classic short story, Purcell’s radical, contemporary, award-winning novel and maybe even watch Purcell’s vibrant cinematic adaptation which will be released in cinemas on 5 May.
