The Tower Room Window is used in a variety of ways during the year including celebrating liturgical seasons, making public statements of support on current issues, marking important events (for example, the Yes campaign, Time for a home, Refugee Week, NAIDOC Week, World Wide Knit in Public Day and more) and showcasing the work of our artists and other community groups.
What is Disability Pride Month?
Disability Pride Month, observed in July each year, is an opportunity for members of the disabled community to celebrate their identities, raise awareness about disability, and advocate for a more inclusive society. It also acknowledges the culture, history, and achievements of people with disabilities.
Why the sunflowers?
The sunflower is a globally recognised symbol of hidden disabilities! Many disabilities are ‘invisible’ or not visually obvious, so the sunflower is a way of discreetly communicating that someone may need extra assistance, care, or time. Many people with hidden disabilities will wear sunflower lanyards or badges, particularly in high-stress environments like airports.
What is BUC doing about disability inclusion?
BUC is committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment where people with disabilities are celebrated and empowered to make their own choices and advocate for their needs. We have a Neurodivergence Working Group, provide fidgets for use during worship, our main church and hall are wheelchair accessible, our services are available to watch from home via livestream, we are upgrading our disabled toilet to improve access, and we foster a culture of permission-giving where people are not judged for how they use our spaces.
