Prayers of Adoration

Watch or 9:22

I am listening, Holy Lover of the earth,
listening for the song of creation,
seeking to have that song resound in my heart.

Creator of the Magpie’s music,
you sing creation into being,
a symphony of such melodic beauty and goodness.
Make your music in us
that together with all creatures
we may sing in harmony with you.

Jesus Christ who numbered the Sparrows with love,
you watch over even the tiniest Scrubwrens
for no thing is beyond your concern.
Give us eyes of compassionate grace
to see the earth as you see it
and to love it as you do.

Holy Spirit descending on wings of peace, dancing dove,
you flit and dart with the Willie Wagtail,
you flutter and feast with the Honeyeaters among the spring blossoms.
May our hearts take flight with you,
soaring into renewal.

Creator of the cosmos,

You have filled this good Earth with complex wonders, abundant beauty,
resilient interdependencies, and you invite us to share this abode with all your guests:
with bandicoots and banksias, bacteria and blue whales, and the billions of beings like us.

But we have abused your divine hospitality. We’ve made a right mess of the place.
We have kicked out other residents and falsely claimed ownership for ourselves.

We grieve the coral bleached white, the forests burned black, the dwindling glaciers,
the silenced birdsong, the oceans emptying of fish and filling with plastic.

Forgive us our habitual greed, our stunted empathy, our careful ignorance.
Forgive our complicity in systems built on lies, that extract too much
and funnel wealth into the pockets of too few.

Fill our lungs with your fresh wind, your Holy Breath, your life-giving Spirit,
that we may sing songs of resistance, renewal, revolution, and that we may walk together
in the true and living way of Jesus so that in you, all may find a home.

Word of Grace

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it…. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.   John 1:1-5, 14

Hear the Word of grace and truth, living among us, healing, renewing and empowering change.
Our sin is forgiven.  Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the people

Watch or 44:49

On this first Sunday of the Season of Creation, I begin these prayers of the people with a prayer published on the ecumenical Season of Creation website. I will then pray for the world, the church and ourselves.

Let us Pray:

Jesus Christ, teach us to empathise with Earth. Make our spirits sensitive to the cries of creation, cries for justice from the land, the seas and the skies. Jesus Christ, make our faith sensitive to the groans of the Spirit in creation, groans of longing for a new creation. Jesus Christ, make our hearts sensitive to the songs of our kin, songs of celebration from the sea, the forest and the air. Christ, teach us to care.

God, the source and creator of all things, we pray for the poor and voiceless across the world who bear the brunt of our exploitation of creation.
Help those of us who benefit from this exploitation learn to align our lives more fully to your way.

God, the source and sustainer of all things, we pray for those whose work is to care and tend the forests, the grasslands, the oceans and the animals of your world.
Help those of us who enjoy the fruits of their work to be inspired to align our lives more fully to your way.

God, the source and goal of all things, we give thanks for our sibling Christians around the world, and those in this congregation, who help the church to see the abiding place of creation in your purposes and the urgency of its needs.
Help all of us to see our responsibility for this earth as part of the life of discipleship which aligns to your way.

God the source of all peace and justice, we pray too for all who suffer from any form of exploitation, injustice or brokenness: the long-suffering people of Afghanistan; the First Nations peoples of this land; those whom lockdowns compound loneliness and depression.
Stir the hearts of those who exercise power in these contexts to align themselves to your way.

And stir our hearts constantly to seek out your way. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
