Prayers of Adoration & Confession

God of the Way,

The path on which you call us never runs straight and smooth.
It bends and turns, it climbs and falls.
On some days we run and dance, and great rises and stones melt beneath our feet
Some days we are staggered by fear and doubt and loss, and every obstacle trips and defeats us.
But always you walk before and beside us, and sweet gardens of peace bloom in your wake.

Mother God,
Take our hand when we are blinded.
Forgive us when we hold too tight to what you given to us through your creation.
Have mercy when we fail to see the need of the poor, the loneliness of the outcast,
the desperation of the refugee, and the groanings of the earth.

Speak to us on the road when we have lost sight of our destination.
Help us to let go of pious certainties and righteous sanctimony,
but find meaning in the sacred questions and mysteries
that you have drawn across the great page of human life.
Open our eyes to find joy in the journey.

Dear Jesus, bind us together as your risen body.
Son of God, firstborn of creation, resurrected Lord, lead us
into holy community with each other and with all the world.
Draw us into the new life that rolls down from your empty grave,
and make us alive to your present Kingdom.

Praise be to you, graceful God, for all your ways are love and peace
and joy in the Holy Spirit. On you we wait all day long.

In the name of Jesus Christ,

Friends, the good news is that in Christ, through Christ,
and because of Christ, our sin is forgiven.

Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the people

Gracious God we come to you in prayer,
bringing with us the uncertainties and hope that are always with us in prayer.
Help us to pray in words and spirit, build in us the confidence
that in these prayers you are drawing us closer to yourself and your compassion for the world.

We pray those who suffer as victims of other peoples,
including our own, malice, greed and foolishness.
Raise up your prophets of mercy and light to bring healing and justice.
This prayer we especially pray today those living with rising sea levels,
those whose lives are diminished by pollution,
and those who needlessly suffer from curable illnesses.

Lord in your compassion, hear our prayer.
We pray for wisdom in the processes of government in this and other countries.
Stir leaders to serve, fill them with visions of justice and righteousness.
This prayer we especially pray for our own nation and that men and women
who are driven by compassion, mercy and truth
will be elected to govern us at the upcoming election.

Lord in your compassion, hear our prayer.

We pray for all those who are the casualties of our political processes:
Australia’s first peoples, refugees, the homeless, victims of domestic violence.
Build in all of us a vision of a society where their needs and circumstances
are not peripheral but central. We especially pray for strength to those who,
with agitation and indignation, do not let us forget these people and their needs.

Lord in your compassion, hear our prayer.

We pray for the church here and beyond.
May we and all churches grow ever more deeply into our knowledge of Jesus Christ
and his merciful, humble and compassionate way.
This prayer we especially pray for whenever we as churches are tempted by power and status.

Lord in your compassion, hear our prayer.

We pray for the ministry and witness of this congregation.
By your spirit encourage all who hold positions of leadership;
by your grace build us up as a community of reconciliation;
by your love open us where we are closed.

Lord in your compassion, hear our prayer.

All these prayers we pray in the name of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.
