Prayers of Adoration & Confession

Watch or 8:18

God of desert skies and hidden springs,
We cherish the life-giving water of your creation:
deep oceans, nourishing rain and rivers that ebb and flow.
Forgive us for standing by as your processes unravel,
encourage us to consider the significance of our actions.
Help us to support the healing of the Earth,
and appreciate the quiet harmony of peace.

Jesus, who comes bearing hope of new beginnings,
we renew ourselves in you, following your ways
and hoping to share your peace.
Forgive us for the times we have been uncaring
or reacted to a situation before seeking understanding.
Help us to build a community that shares and listens deeply,
Allowing us to respond with compassion.

Holy Spirit, that penetrates the blueness of the sky and the flame red of the rocks,
connecting us through the earth to one another and to God.
Forgive us for ignoring the life that we are called to be part of.
Teach us to listen for you in the voices of those that are pulled by the currents.
Stop us from discriminating based on the colour of a person’s passport,
and, with the spirit of wisdom, lead us to act prayerfully
as we light the candle of peace in the world.
Amen

Word of Grace
Believe the Good News that comes from God: In Christ we are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.

Prayers of the people

Watch or 41:40

On Tuesday we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ASWC here at BUC.
Hospitality and shared meals have been a part of the ASWC for many years and so I have chosen to offer today’s prayers for peace around the image of a table. I invite you to light a taper for your own prayers in the chapel space after the service.   Let us pray:

God of the banquet
Jesus, host at the table
Ever present Sprit,
We pray for peace.
We pray for peace in the world, in our church, and in our community.

We pray for a time when we may sit peacefully around a table together,
a table where we can express different political views and values,
a table where we are able to bring different customs, enjoy different foods, and speak different languages.

We pray for a time when we may sit together in peace
and share our stories at the table,
listening to each other as we share hospitality,
learning and understanding each other better.

We pray for a time when we may sit peacefully around a table together
in spite of our different faiths,
and our different beliefs within the same faith,
when we can break bread together
and focus on what we share, rather than what divides us.

We pray for a time when we may sit together in peace and
everyone has a seat at the table
everyone is invited to take a plate and help yourself.
A time when food is made available to everyone,
And there is enough food for us all.

May our tables be places of peace,
May we follow Jesus and be both guest and host,
And may tables be places of hospitality and peace throughout the world
this Advent and in the coming year.

Amen.
