Rita Broadway (1949 – 2015) was an artist and an art teacher.  She loved painting, especially flowers, so delicate and beautiful. Rita taught in Clare, S.A. and loved going out with a colleague on weekends, painting beautiful landscapes.
Rita was always open to the smallest acts of kindness with a deep sense of gratitude. She was a person of great depth, known for her great delight in beauty.
Prompted to create a contemporary Stations of the Cross, Rita took up the invitation to walk the journey with Jesus. Reflecting on his pain, she created ten drawings of Jesus’ experience, in the Garden of Gethsemane to Easter morning, reflected in his eyes.  It was a journey she could walk with great sensitivity, with feeling, depth and insight, for Rita lived with bipolar. These paintings also reflect her own journey.
The drawings were a response by the artist to an invitation by Bruce Prewer, then the minister at Pilgrim Uniting Church, Adelaide.  Thank you, Pilgrim Adelaide for allowing us to borrow them; thanks to Thalia Collard, instigator of the project, and to all those who assist with the exhibition.

Reflective responses

  • As you walk through the exhibition, seeing what Jesus saw reflected in his eyes, you may also read his response. What feelings are evoked in you?
  • Spend time with one artwork to which you feel drawn. What images of what you’ve seen during your life rise to the surface of memory?  You may like to respond to this image by drawing or writing a poem.  Art materials are provided.
  • Rita’s artwork may bring up experiences of pain and suffering you or others experience. Hold these gently, and reflect with Jesus, the Sophia (Wisdom) of God.
  • Please write any responses you’d like to share in the exhibition book. If you are happy to leave your poem or artwork, it can be included.
