December 2019 & January 2020 roster
If you have ever thought about joining the rosters that support the work of worship now is the time.  A number of the regular roster participants will be on leave and/or have other commitments over these two months.   Please consider offering to participate, particularly if you are willing to learn how to operate the sound system and laptop.  Here is the draft roster so you can check out the vacancies.  If you are a regular participant please let me know if there are any errors in your allocated duties.

LGBTIQ Solidarity Service
A time of worship on Sunday 24th November to celebrate the diverse expressions of gender and sexuality in our congregation, and in particular to stand in solidarity with our LGBTIQ members.  More details here.  This is a normal Sunday morning service to which everyone is welcome. Some of our LGBTIQ identifying members will participate through poetry, song and reflection.

Congregational Meeting and Lunch
Everyone is invited to stay on after worship for our Congregational Meeting & Lunch on Sunday 24th November.  The agenda will include the Election of Elders and a presentation of a resolution from the BUC Climate Action Group.  An agenda together with profiles of the nominees for the position of Elder will be distributed on Sunday 17th  November.  Lunch will be provided following the meeting. Offers of fruit platters are very welcome along with assistance for setting up and packing up.  Please email if you are available to do so.

Exploring faith / confirmation sessions:
For those aged 15 to 22, Ian is offering some excellent pizza nights, exploring the Christian faith, asking the big questions and getting a clearer understanding of Christ Emmanuel – God with us. It may lead you to consider confirmation. 6:30pm on Thursday 28th November, December 5 at the Manse: 60 Blyth St, Brunswick. Contact Ian directly:

OLIVE PESTO craft group
We have 3 special extra meetings over the next little while; all low-key, friendly, fun. Bring whatever you are working on AND/OR join in the making of craft items (leaves, flowers, fruit) toward the colourful BUC Advent installation.

  • Saturday 23 November, 10-12pm in the Youth Hall.
  • Saturday 30 November, 10-12pm in the Youth Hall
  • Saturday 07 November, 10-12pm in the Olive Way.

BIUC Christmas Celebration
Everyone is welcome to join this special service on Sunday 1st December, 5pm till late.  The theme for the service is:  ‘Knowing the humble Saviour transforms life’.  A delicious feast is offered after the service.

Cradled in the Arms of Love
Everyone is invited to the launch of ‘Cradled in the Arms of Love:  the Incredible Journey of the Universe’, on Sunday 8th December, 1:30 in the BUC Hall.  Details here.

Act for Peace Christmas Bowl FUNdraising Stalls
Our congregation is a long time supporter of this appeal and one of the big ways we do this is through our FUNraising stalls after worship on Sunday 8th and 15th December.  Find out more:

Advent & Christmas choir
If you love to sing, love to sing in a choir and love to sing during Advent and Christmas this is your opportunity.  Contact Elaine Potter, 0434 671 109‬, to join the choir.  You can participate as much as you are able, ie you don’t have to be able to sing at every event.   Rehearsal will be on Thursday evenings.

Please email your contributions to for the December Olive Branch by Monday 25th November ready for publication on Sunday 1st December.  Please note there will not be an Olive Branch in January.

Climate Action News

Climate Action Group
The BUC Climate Action group is proposing, with the support of Church Council, that Brunswick Uniting Church (BUC) declares a climate crisis at the Congregational Meeting on Sunday 24th November. The next meeting will be after worship on Sunday 1st December at 11.15am as the group considers what this might mean for our properties and lifestyle at Brunswick Uniting

Australian Religious Response to Climate Change
ARRCC is a multi-faith network of people committed to climate change, GreenFaith ARRCC – next monthly meeting is Sunday 24th November at 5.30pm St Philip’s Anglican Church, 146 Hoddle Street, Collingwood.

Counihan Gallery 233 Sydney Rd events for children

  • Little Activists Letter Writing – a Author Ailsa Wild will be hosting a Little Activist’s Letter Writing Workshop at The Counihan Gallery on Saturday 23rd November11am-12noon, for ages 8+, all materials will be provided. This is a FREE event, but bookings are appreciated.
  • Craft activities inspired by Beci Orpin’s new book “Take Heart, Take Action” – Create your own message for the world with the help of Beci’s crafty guidance. at The Counihan Gallery on Saturday 30th November 11am-12noon, for ages 5+, all materials will be provided. This is a FREE event, but bookings are appreciated.

This event is hosted by School Strike 4 Climate on Friday 29th November 2.30-4pm at Parliament of Victoria, Spring Street.

Community Direct Action Training
FLAC (Front Line Action on Coal) which is opposed to Adani’s proposed Carmichael mine in the Galilee Basin in Queensland is holding a FREE Non-Violent Direct Action Training day on Saturday 30th November 10am-5pm. More details here.
