Ian on Leave
Ian will be on leave from 21st October to 5th November.
27th October – We will welcome Kirsten Parris, member of our congregation and ecologist with a passion for frogs, as our preacher.
3rd November – We will welcome Fiona Bottcher, member of our congregation and exit candidate for the Ministry of Deacon as our preacher.Fiona was recently approved for ordination by the Presbytery.Janet Reus-Smit, member of our congregation and retired minister, will preside over Holy Communion.

Blessing of the Bikes
On Sunday 20th October we will conclude the final Sunday of our Season of Creation with the annual and very popular Blessing of the Bikes after worship.  All non-motorized forms of transport (scooters, bicycles, pushers, prams, skateboards, walkers, wheelchairs, etc) will be blessed.  BUC Cycle will then host a bike ride along one of Melbourne’s famous cycling tracks. BYO picnic to share along the way.

Pop-up Op Shop
Helen Burnham is hosting another instalment of our famous FUNdraising Op Shops.  It’s time to clear out your wardrobe, cupboards and other places where treasure lurks.  Bring them along and place them neatly in the Tower Room (near where taper lighting happens during worship).  Helen will sort them and display them ready for you to purchase other people’s treasures.  It’s all happening for three Sundays – 20th, 27th October and 3rd November.  We’re FUNdraising for the CYYA grounds beautification project(s).

Olive Pips Playgroup
Our next gathering of pre-schoolers and parents will take place on Saturday 26th October, from 9:30am at the Church. Please bring some food to share, and one or two of your favourite books for story-time. RSVP to Dave would be handy (0417 310 128)

Seeking Qualified First-Aiders
There will be occasions in any of our BUC activities or programs when a First Aid person might be required to provide assistance.   Do you have a current First Aid, CPR or AED certificate?    Would you be willing to respond if the need arose?  We will need a copy of your current certificate.  Please contact Helen Rowe on 0423 009 813 to indicate your willingness to assist in this way and for further information.

Safe Church Training
Here’s an opportunity for BUC volunteers and leaders to complete their Safe Church training at North Melbourne Uniting Church, 4 Elm Street North Melbourne on Sunday 27 October at 11.30 am.  All appointed leaders i.e those required to have a Working With Children Check are required to attend such a workshop. Contemporary classical music recital
On Sunday 20th October at 4pm, internationally acclaimed virtuoso pianist Nicholas Young is performing original contemporary classical music composed in Brunswick by Alan Griffiths, at Tempo Rubato. He will be joined by ANAM Fellow cellist Gemma Kneale and Melbourne Opera Orchestra concertmaster Ben Spiers.  See the Australia National Academy of Music (ANAM) has published a blog describing this concert. Climate Action Group
The BUC Climate Action group is inviting members of the congregation of all ages to join and help lead this group. The next meeting will be after worship on Sunday 20th October as the group considers why we need to declare a Climate Emergency and what this might mean for our properties and lifestyle at Brunswick Uniting.  If you would like to join please contact Richard on richarn50@gmail.com or mobile 0407796429.

Australian Religious Response to Climate Change
ARRCC is a multi-faith network of people committed to climate change:

  • GreenFaith ARRCC – next monthly meeting is Sunday 20th October at 5.30pm St Philip’s Anglican Church, 146 Hoddle Street, Collingwood.
  • ARRCC is holding a National Conference on Faith in Action in Canberra from 8th to 10th November. Participants will share and learn with the help of inspirational campaigners, skilled community organisers, Aboriginal activists, faith leaders and experts in their fields. Registrations close on Friday 25th October.

Film night 2040
Camilla Kasker and Tim Budge, from the Climate Action Group at Brunswick Uniting Church, will be hosting a film night on Thursday 31st October, and screening the film 2040, directed by Damon Gameau, who also directed That Sugar Film (2014). This is a hopeful and inspiring vision of solutions to turn around climate change, using our available resources.

  • Food and drinks will be available from 7pm (more details on menu to come). The film will start at 7:30pm and run for 90 minutes.
  • Tickets are free/by donation, but please RSVP for catering purposes. (But don’t worry if you change your mind to come last minute!)
