The Olive Pages

Reflections during Lent
The Discipleship & Education committee invites you to a series of Lenten reflections after worship, 11:30-1:00, on 15th & 22nd March in the Gathering Space.  These are stand alone sessions, no need to commit to all three.
The second of the Lenten Talk Faith groups will be held on 26th March, 7:30pm in the Youth Hall.

Lenten Offering
The Justice & Mission committee will launch the Synod of VicTas Lenten Offering Appeal during worship on 8th March.  Last week during the All Age Worship service the children decorated envelopes for us to take home – there may not be enough for everyone, spare envelopes are available for you to take home decorate as you wish.  You are invited to place an amount of money of your choosing in the envelope each week as a form of Lenten discipline of in response to what you are experiencing or reflecting on.  We will receive and bless these offerings during worship on Palm Sunday.

Mechanics of the Eye
Mechanics of the Eye” life drawing classes will be  offered for three more weeks Sundays 8th, 15th & 22nd in the West End of the Hall at 12 noon., 11.45am – 2.15pm (includes prep and tidy-up)..  Paper and pencils are available or BYO. West End Hall at the church. $10/$1-$5 concession per class.

Nourish
This beautiful worship series for school aged children and adults returns for three weeks during Lent and Holy Week – 25th March, 1st & 8th April.  Contact Dave Hall, CYYA pastor, for more information, 0417 310 128.

Art for the Heart
Seven artists from the Olive Arts Collective have contributed works to the annual Art for the Heart exhibition.  Come along to the launch on  Saturday 28th March, 2:30-5:00pm.  The exhibition will be open to the public, Saturday, 28th March  –  Sunday, 5th April 2020 from 10.00am to 6.00pm daily.  Read more.

Welcoming Ceremony
Twice a year we offer an opportunity for people who are new or newish to the congregation to participate in a liturgy during which you can name Brunswick UC as your community of faith.  Our first one for this year is during worship on Sunday 29th March.  For more information see the Welcoming Ceremony Event post.

Welcoming Lunches
The Pastoral Care Community Team has a vision that after worship on 29th March there will be lots of lunches happening in our community.  If you would like to be a host and invite one or two of the people who have been welcomed, along with others from the congregation, to lunch – this is your moment!   The Pastoral Care Hospitality Team will put you in touch with those being welcomed and for the rest we invite you to look around at worship or look through the Directory beforehand.   Please contact Saide Cameron, 0407 096 743, to offer to be a host.

Climate Action News

BUC Climate Crisis Action Plan
In November 2019, the congregation declared a Climate Crisis and committed to developing a Climate Crisis Plan by May 2020. The Church Council needs help with drafting, and then implementing this Action Plan!

Moreland Climate Fair
Come and meet the many climate groups from Moreland and surrounds and find out how you can get involved at the Moreland Climate Fair at the Brunswick Bouldering Wall in Sydney Road on Saturday 14th March 10am-2pm. Whether you are interested in urban farming, human signs, writing letters or joining direct actions, find the local activity or group that suits you.

Marsh: rule out working with Adani!
The Meditation protest: Marsh out of Adani to help pressure Marsh not to provide insurance brokering for the Adani Coal Mine was originally planned for Tuesday 17th March but has been postponed. However, there is a March against Marsh at midday on Friday 20th March at 727 Collins St, Docklands.

Australian Religious Response to Climate Change
ARRCC is a multi-faith network of people committed to climate change, GreenFaith ARRCC – next monthly meeting is Sunday 22nd March 5.30-7.30pm St Philip’s Anglican Church, 146 Hoddle Street, Collingwood. Help ARRCC plan and carry out major projects:

  • adding our weight to the next School Strike for Climate (Friday 15th May) by ringing bells/sounding the shofar/other cultural sound, hanging signs and increasing our visible presence on the day. If you would like to help ARRCC with the climate strike (irrespective of whether you can come to the monthly meetings), then please have a look at www.arrcc.org.au/strike to register your willingness to help.
  • dissuading potential sub-contractors from working on the Adani Carmichael coal mine.

This year’s annual Trivia Night and Silent Auction will be on Wednesday 25th March.  There will be lots of fun games and items to bid on as well.

Diving Deep into Diversity – arts, music, stories focussing on Refugees, Indigenous, LGBTI, Wellbeing, and Sustainability – the Sacred Edge Festival is hosted by Queenscliff Uniting Church from 1st-3rd May. An Early Bird ticket costs only a little more than a full day ticket – so book before the end of February and have the flexibility of full-weekend access.
The annual Sacrededge Art Exhibition 2020 will be exhibited at the Queenscliff UC during the Sacrededge Festival May 1-3, and the through until 20th May.  If you are an artist, you are warmly encouraged to consider participating in the Sacrededge Art Exhibition.  Your art might reflect on the Indigenous, Refugee, LGBTI and Sustainability themes of the festival. Or how your art practice supports inclusivity and wellbeing for you and the wider community.  Please feel very welcome to submit an  Expression of Interest for this exhibition by 20th March.
