Church Council 2018-01-05T00:38:34+00:00

The Church Council is responsible for the oversight of the whole of the congregation’s life.  The council has 10 elected members (the Elders of the congregation) and the Minister of the Word.  Meetings are held monthly on the second Tuesday and the council also participates in an Annual Retreat.

The work of the Council is shaped by the UCA Constitution & Regulations 2008, 3.Government & Administration – Church Council.

The Strategic Plan 2018-21 (approved at the Congregational Meeting on 26th November 2017) is intended to guide the work of the Church Council as it leads Brunswick UC.  This plan is the product of various sources including the 2016 Mission Planning Report, feedback from committees and discernment by Council.

Elders are elected at the November Congregational Meeting.  Nominees must be confirmed members of the UCA or members-in-association (ie confirmed members of another denomination).

At Brunswick UC the Council is supported by ten committees &/or areas of responsibility which form two distinct groups.

  • Doing (engaging with people within and beyond the congregation):  Worship, Pastoral Care, Children, Youth & Young Adult, Justice & Mission, Discipleship & Education
  • Enabling (supporting our ministries, programs and activities):  Finance, Communications, Property, Providing Support, Wider Church

Responsibilities of Elders include

  • assisting with and serving Holy Communion on the first Sunday of the month
  • assisting with baptisms and confirmations
  • attending monthly council meetings and reading reports in preparation
  • where possible, joining one of our committees which report to Council meetings
  • reporting back to represented committees
  • maintaining an active presence in the life of the congregation

In 2012 the Church Council adopted a comprehensive set of Guidelines known as Working Together which is reviewed regularly.  The Council Guidelines are available here.

Council meetings are run in accordance with the UCA Manual for Meetings.
