Our April discussion will focus on Kurdish poet and journalist, Behrouz Boochani’s, No friend but the mountains: writing from Manus Prison. It is an autobiographical account of his perilous journey to Christmas Island and subsequent illegal incarceration in an Australian government immigration detention facility in 2013. Over five years, Boochani laboriously tapped out his account on a mobile phone and sent it, one text message at a time, to be translated from Farsi and published in Australia in 2018. It is a voice of witness, an act of survival. A lyric first-hand account. A cry of resistance.

Boochani’s book has won many prizes including the Victorian premier’s literary prize, and the National Biography award.
