Good News Stories from UCA Assembly 

In the (really) final week of our #TowardsZero series of good news stories about climate action in the church (for now), the Queensland Synod is sharing why they are committed to climate action, embarking on implementing their Flourishing Creation Action and Advocacy Plan. This story is full of biblical wisdom and practical steps your communities can take to also pursue a flourishing creation.

Towards Net Zero: Good News Stories from across the national Uniting Church will highlight possibilities and achievements in moving towards a sustainable future. From local congregations to Indigenous theologians, agencies and Synods, the series is a way to draw the whole Church together as we lead up to the 17th Assembly where the steering group will bring a follow up report on its work this past triennium.

The first story was an interview with indigenous theologian Panninher man Rev Tim Matton-Johnson. Tim shares a First Nations theology of the environment, inviting us into a world where the earth is our first teacher and guide. You can watch video and read the transcript here.
In week 2 of this new series, we heard from Queenscliff Uniting Church, who are learning to sustainably care for Wadawurrung Country, where their community worships. You can read the story here.
Week 3, the good news from the UCA Assembly on Climate Action is an interview with Jon O’Brien who works for the advocacy team for Uniting NSW.ACT.
Week 4, we check in with Aitken College in Greenvale, Victoria, to learn about all the ways in which their students and staff contribute to creation care.
In week 5 we heard from Good Sammy Enterprises in Western Australia. Founded in 1958, this Uniting Church agency contributes to the community and sustainability through recycling across its op shops.
Week 6 we heard from Uniting Communities – the first certified carbon-neutral organisation in South Australia. They are making bold steps towards their goal of becoming Net Zero by 2035.

“Kingfisher Family Tell Us Your Story” is written by Richard Arnold and designed by his 12-year-old grandson Theo.
The images of Australian kingfishers were taken by the author.
Richard describes the 24-page book as “Ornithological/Theological” and should interest readers of all ages. In this book, the Kingfisher Family tells their story of how they have emerged in relationship with all life since the journey of the Universe began over 13.7 billion years ago. The 10 members of the Kingfisher Family in Australia, each tell part of the family story as well as their own individual story. Collectively, they explain how interdependent and interrelated they are with other beings, including humans. They particularly mention the challenges to their unique ecological niche due to the actions of human beings. They call on humans to respect their right to exist and thrive.
