Make Big Polluters Pay Melbourne Community Event

Next week we’re joining forces with our friends at ActionAid Australia and Oxfam to put on a Make Big Polluters Pay community event, bringing people together over a meal to connect, learn more about the campaign to make the big polluters pay and take some fun actions. Will you join us?
Right now, households are paying for the impacts of climate pollution from our grocery bills to skyrocketing insurance premiums. It’s outrageous that the biggest coal and gas corporations who are making extreme weather events worse are raking in billions in profits and paying barely any tax.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Rather than subsidising the coal and gas companies who have gotten us into this mess, a responsible federal government should make the big polluters pay and use those funds to keep communities safe through a climate compensation fund.
But to make sure polluting coal and gas companies pay their fair share, we need your help.

Jane Kelly joins ARRCC team as Campaigner-Organiser

Following a strong recruitment process, we’re thrilled to welcome Jane Kelly to the ARRCC team as our new Campaigner–Organiser working alongside Tejopala the Executive Director of ARRCC.
Many of you will already know Jane through her work with Common Grace, where she has helped Christians engage with climate justice. Jane will continue working with Common Grace while also joining ARRCC, helping strengthen collaboration across Australia’s faith climate movement.
At ARRCC, Jane will:
- support and encourage our network of volunteers and local organisers;
- work with faith communities and leaders across Australia;
- coordinate campaign activities and resources; and
- help build momentum for our Fossil Fuel Treaty campaign.
New report on the potential impacts of oil and gas activities in the Arafura and Timor Seas

Jubilee Australia Research Centre has just published an important new report revealing how companies and government regulators fail to account for the true scope of potential impacts of oil and gas activities in the Arafura and Timor Seas (ATS). This report was led by our partner Sea of Nations, a First-Nations led organisation connecting coastal communities across the region.
We want to protect and sustain the health of the precious coastal waters of the ATS, and these findings are worrying.
The ATS are home to rich marine ecosystems. The seas border Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste, supporting the livelihoods and cultures of coastal communities in these countries. But the ATS is also known for its oil and gas resources. Offshore exploration began in the 1950s and now a total of 758 petroleum wells have been drilled in the Australian waters of the ATS. And it is possible that projects will expand significantly in the coming years.
Our new report ‘The cumulative impacts of oil and gas production in the Arafura and Timor Seas. Beyond invisible borders. What will governments say ‘yes’ to protecting?’ uses data from project documents published by companies to assess the potential cumulative impacts of offshore oil and gas production in the ATS, and how they are currently being addressed.
End fuel subsidies for big mining companies – sign the petition

Last week at the Labor Party National Conference, there was complete unanimous support for capping the diesel fuel rebate for big mining companies. Every single delegate voted, and some key Labor MPs spoke defiantly about the message this sends about decarbonisation.
Ending the free ride is now party policy, but to get the Albanese Government to enact it is another challenge.
We need to show just how much public support there is for capping the scheme at $50 million, and be louder than the mining lobby who are mounting a desperate attempt to block it.

Making big polluters pay for climate change in local communities – Sign the Petition

The campaign to make polluters pay for the cost of climate change damage to local communities is gathering strength. Community groups are working with 85 local councils across Australia. Five councils have adopted the motion in full and many are considering it.
If you are a resident of Merri-bek, and you support making polluters pay, please sign the local petition here and forward it to friends and neighbours.
Merri-bek council is in favour of the principle but has not yet fully adopted the motion so we need strong support for this petition.
