On the 24th of July, local artist Myrashel opened a solo exhibition titled ‘Behold’ with the Olive Arts Collective at the Brunswick Uniting Church.

The exhibition, made of 22 paintings to represent the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet, was a “personal exploration of Hebrew language, spirituality, Christian experience and faith” for the artist.

He utilised abstraction and symbolism, often using the splash method inspired by Jackson Pollock.

“A lot of the symbolism is from creation in Genesis”, he said on the intersection of the various subjects in his work. “It reminded me of a common heritage, which reminded me of the commonality of humanity”.

The exhibition was opened by Merri-bek Mayor and close friend of the artist, Cr Nat Aboud. 95 people visited across the first weekend, including fellow artists and friends, members of the BUC community as well as many passing by along Sydney Road.

“For a long-time this church has attracted artistic people”, Myrashel said.
