We are entering the Wurrundjerri season of Poorneet, tadpole season. A marker of new life. The Aboriginal seasons are not only marked by the behaviour of animals and plants but also the skies and human behaviour as well.
I have been reflecting on our own seasonal nature at Brunswick Uniting. Worship committee meets by zoom in the winter months, and in spring we return to in person meetings. Some struggle with illness, others travel up north or overseas returning again in spring. School holidays beckon, mid semester break a welcome relief.
We are also at the turning point of ordinary time in the church year – we are halfway between Pentecost and Advent. Plans for the Christmas pageant begin. We have been travelling with Jesus and his disciples in Matthew’s gospel and as the season turns so does the story as Jesus begins to tell the disciples what it means that he must suffer and die.
Outside the wattles come out; the first sign of change. The air gets warmer, the washing finally dries on the line, it’s nice to sit and have a cuppa outside again, I don’t always need an extra blanket on the bed. The days get longer, it feels possible to do more than just protect yourself from the cold.
What do you need to leave behind with winter? What transitions are taking place in your life? What new life is emerging in you?
As we celebrate the Season of Creation in September, I pray that the signs of the resurrection, of new life and creativity surround you as we enter into spring.
