BUC News for 12th November

Love Makes a Way will host a Vigil for Men on Manus on Tuesday 14th November, 5pm at the Department of Immigration & Border Protection Offices. Details here.

Looking for a new home – two sets of bunk beds (tubular steel), one royal blue & very plain, the other heritage green with a decorative head. Also a full set of encyclopaedias from around 1975 with corresponding year books for at least the 10 following years. Contact Catherine Mullen, 9382 1212.

A Congregational Meeting will be held after worship on Sunday 26th November. The meeting will include the election of Elders and will be followed by a Congregational Lunch. Please contact Saide Cameron, 0407 096 743 for more information.

Nominations for Elders – Nominations are now called for Elders of our Church Council.  Ideally our Church Council is made up of 10 Elders providing leadership and oversight of the ministry and mission of our congregation through our committee structure. We have had ongoing vacancies in the last couple of years.

  • Steph Gesling is continuing as an Elder.
  • Daniel Broadstock, Shawn Whelan, Kate Scull, Linda Wannan are all re-nominating.
  • Ann Soo and Ray Cameron are concluding after 2 and 5 years respectively on Council.

To be eligible for the role of Elder you must be a confirmed member of the Uniting Church or a confirmed member-in-association, ie confirmed in another denomination.  Formal details about Church Council are provided here.  Chat to one of the people named above if you want to learn more about their experiences.  Nomination forms are available here must be provided to Saide Cameron by 12th November at the latest.

Join the Advent &/or Pageant choirs – This is always a wonderful opportunity to sing beautiful music together. Rehearsals will be organized at a mutually agreeable time once we know who is interested and available. Contact Elaine Potter for more information, 0434 671 109.

Christian Meditation at Brunswick
There are a number of opportunities to be involved in Christian Meditation in Brunswick.  There are weekly meetings at 29 MacFarland Street Brunswick each Wednesday at 8am and 5.30pm (meetings go for 30 minutes). These will be every Wednesday until 13th December, except 29th November.
There is one more Sunday meditation time, meeting at the church at 8.15am: Sunday 10th December.

Save the date!  Stewart lodge Christmas Carols and Gift presentation night
Tuesday 19th December between 6.30 and 8.00 pm at Stewart Lodge 85 Stewart Street Brunswick
You can participate by:

  • Coming along and singing carols on the night
  • Helping with the packing of the bags on Sunday 10th December at 11.30 am
  • Helping prepare and share supper before the presentation of gifts

We also invite you to make a cash donation toward the 70 gift bags (each valued at $30) which we will give to each of the residents.
Commencing on Sunday 12th November please place your money in the special retiring offering box at church after worship or give it to Richard Arnold. Road Trauma Support Services Victoria invite you to a ‘Time for Remembering‘ on Sunday 19th November, 11:45am, Queens Hall, Parliament House. Details here

Sophia’s Spring UC (CERES) will hold a ‘Break the Silence Sunday’ service on Sunday 26th November, 10am, with Moderator Rev Sharon Hollis as guest speaker, to reflect on the issue of violence against women and girls and how the Church might take action to prevent it. Morning Tea will be provided following the service.

25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the global campaign known as the ’16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence’ which runs from November 25 to December 10 – International Human Rights day.  The sixteen days includes World Aids day – Dec 1; International Day for Abolition of Slavery Dec 2;Persons With Disabilities Day Dec 3; commemoration of the Montreal Massacre Dec 6; and Victims of Genocide Commemoration Dec 9.

Also on 26th November at 2.30pm at St Peter’s Eastern Hill there will be an ecumenical service to remember the victim/survivors of violence. All are welcome.
